Project description

Project is implemented from December 12, 2008 to December 11, 2009 on the territory of Moscow and Moscow region, St.-Petersburg, regions of Central and Youth Russian and Povolzhie.

General aims:

The Project is directed to the strengthening of horizontal relations in human rights society for the closer cooperation and effective actions of solidarity towards human rights protection, civil groups and non-governmental organizations, involved into human rights activity. One of the main aims is to strengthen the system of fundamental rights (firstly, rights to assembly and associations) in Russia and work out the system of operative reaction on violations. For the realization of these goals we are going to implement work with civil activists, human rights defenders, non-governmental organizations, journalists, international organizations. The main objectives of the Project are:

1. to analyze the current situation with fundamental rights and the status of human rights defenders, single out problems and develop recommendations, available to both national authorities and international organizations on improvements;

2. to narrow the discrepancy between law and practice by contesting in court and with nonjudicial mechanisms the violations of the legal regulations of fundamental freedoms (with focus on the cases of strategic character);

3. to provide consultation, legal defense and informational support to human rights activists and NGOs facing administrative obstacles, violations of their rights or persecution due to their professional activities;

4. to develop effective strategies against pressure on independent NGOs and activists; to strengthen networks of solidarity and mutual aid and to organize several successful campaigns of support;

5.to work out effective strategy of how to resist the pressure on independent NGOs and activists;

6. to bring together successes of the human rights community and to promote the importance of the role human rights defenders play in the society;

7. to establish and develop sustainable networks in defense of human rights defenders, for solidarity and mutual aid with independent NGOs in Russia.
