Response to Putin’s speech

Aaron Rhodes
Executive Director of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights

As Russian human rights defenders have shown Europe and the world, promoting human rights in states that are members of the United Nations and that signed and ratified human rights treaties like the European Convention on Human Rights means not imposing any foreign system, but rather encouraging states to honor rights that belong to their people, and to which they have committed themselves to respect in legally binding treaties. Promoting human rights is not interfering in internal affairs but defending a system of international obligations founded on universal values.

As a signatory to the Helsinki Accords, Russia has embraced the principle that human rights violations are threats to international security and matters of international concern.
President Putin evidently disagrees with those commitments.
