English Language Page There was a press-conference: "Violation of criminal legislation in Krasnoyarsk regional court and legal perspectives of the case of Valentine Dalinov in the stage of appeal in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation"
The chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group Ludmila Alexeeva is convinced that the prosecution of the scholar Valentine Dalinov is a political action. The other participants of the press-conferance, which was held on June 27, 2005, agreed with this. The lawyers Anna Stavitskaya and Anatoli Yablakov, giving legal assessment of the case of V. Dalinov, Nikita Beli, the chairman of the SPS Political Advice, Ernest Churney, the responsible secretary of the Public committee for the protection of scholars, Alexander Trachenko, the head of the Russian PEN-center, which gave the public a legal assessment.
E. Churney is confident that the arrest of V. Dalinov for ten days until pronouncement of the sentence signfies that the sentence was predetermined. The lawyer A. Stavitskaya said that the judge considered as the fundamental proof of guilt of V. Danilov was the transmission from him of information to China (although this fact was from him and was not disputed). The question about whether he considered that this information was a state secret was not even considered by the judge.
The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation must pronounce a judgement on the appeal complaint of the lawyers of V. Danilov on June 29, 2005. In the event that the Supreme Court does not vacate the sentence of the Krasnoyarsk regional court about the conviction of V. Danilov for espionage in favor of China in the fourteenth year of freedom of destitution, the defense will lodge a complaint in the European Court for Human Rights.
The chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group L. Alexeeva mentioned that the prosecution of scholars by the federal security service of the Russian Federation and the origin of so called “espionage work” threatens a closure of the Russian community and a new “cold war.”
