English Language Page Members of the observant advice "Moscow News" assembled their credentials
On June 27, 2005 the members of the Observation Council of the newspaper “Moscow News” Ludmila Aleckseyeva, Yuri Afanasev, Alexander Gelman, Yuri Levada, Yuri Rizhov, Alexander Yakovlev, Igor Yakovlev, and Yevgeny Yaseen declared that they assembled with them the credentials of the members of the observation council. As it was said in their declaration, this was constrained since the observation council did not succeed in obtaining reimbursement for the employees of the editorial staff who were fired by Yevgeny Keselev
Ludmila Aleckseyeva stated: “Moscow News” certainly is a quite peculiar newspaper. Because at the dawn of Perestroika this newspaper played a colossal part, coming out as the first free newspaper in Russia from the soviet period until the collapse of the Soviet Union. And since then, this newspaper has continued to be very intelligent, very serious, very responsible with the printing aparatus of the liberal-democratic movement. Yevgeny Alekseevich gave as a reason for the dismissal of the old staff of the editors that it is necessary to make the newspaper more widely read, to increase its circle of readers. I think that it is possible to do this only if “Moscow News” is made similar to “Moscow Komsomol Member.” But then I do not want to be a member of the Observation Council of such a newspaper.”
