THE STATEMENT OF MALIK SAIDULLAYEV’S HEAD OF ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Today, on September 25, 2003 the Supreme Court of Russia put the last touch in the argument about whether the Chechen people have the right to elect the President of the Chechen Republic. The Court decided that the Chechen people have no such right.

Our opponents, the enemies of the Chechen people, realized that even unlimited use of the administrative powers cannot help them win the elections. So, they resorted to all known dirty methods. They threatened business interests, health and life of the candidates, they resorted to straightforward bribes, beatings, kidnappings and murders of the members of our election team, unjust court proceedings, and the authority of the Russian President, everything was used to pave the road for the Kremlin’s candidate.

Some believe that many thousands of Chechens who died during the jihad declared by Kadyrov in his time is not enough. It is not enough that dozens of thousands of peaceful Chechens died due to the irresponsible decisions of the Moscow politicians and their Chechen lieutenants. Kadyrov has headed the Republic for three years now and during all this time some people disappeared without a trace, others were brutally tortured or executed without any court proceedings. It is obvious that this situation is perfectly good for those who did not allow the Chechen people to conduct honest elections. That is why they are doing their best and stop at nothing to prolong the powers of Kadyrov’s bloody regime in the Chechen Republic.

I am not disappointed because I have never been in love with President Putin and his methods of solving the Chechen crisis. The political history and the past of Putin influence everything his hand touches. The elections of the President of the Chechen Republic are conducted as a thoroughly planned operation of a special task force.

Light seemed to be appearing at the end of the tunnel of the Chechen tragedy, and now it has disappeared again. And the darkness will not dissolve until not only the Kremlin, but also we, ourselves, realize one simple truth. Nobody can change the tragic fate of the nation which is watching indifferently the desperate attempts of its few sons to change it. It was not enough to be ready to vote on the day of elections. Our people needed strong resolve to fight for their right to choose. But today our people are tired of fighting and nobody can blame them for it.

And until that time my comrades and I will be proud that Malik Saidullaev, our candidate for President, did not give up when he faced open threats, that he was not seduced by numerous promises, that in his disinterested desire to serve the cause of the Chechen people he went till the very end! He did not give any reason to blame him for political cowardice and inconsistency. Malik Saidullaev revealed himself as a mature, persevering and resolute politician who is capable of conducting dialogue with all the sides in the Chechen crisis, of consolidating the Chechen nation and leading it to a better future.

We believe that the Chechens will see a day of celebration! And it is not far away.

We know that this celebration will be organized by Malik Saidullaev, the President of the Chechen Republic!

Mukhamed Arsanukaev,
former head of M. Saidullaev’s election campaign
