On August 5, the body of a local resident, Akhmed Khamidovich Dzhamaldaev, born 1958, with multiple wounds was found on the field of the state farm "Ataginsky" in the village of Starye Atagi of the Groznoselsky district. He worked as a watchman guarding the state farm's fields. After examining the body and the place where the man died the local residents came to the following conclusion: Dzhamaldaev found an object he never saw before (probably it was a mine), took the object and knocked on it with a hammer, as a result of which the object exploded in his hands (the remnants of the object remained on the dead man's hands). Dzhamaldaev's relatives took pictures of the dead man and the place where he died. Next day Dzhamaldaev was buried on the village cemetery.

On August 8, in daytime, the servicemen stationed on the territory of the former mill opened fire at a Zhiguli car with three village residents, when the car was entering the village of Starye Atagi of the Groznoselsky district. As a result Khjasan Samrailovich Sanarbekov, 45 y.o. (?), was seriously wounded and subsequently died.

This is what the local residents tell about the incident.

In the afternoon Sanarbekov and two other villagers were coming home in a Zhiguli car (the license number is unknown). Sanarbekov was sitting in the rear of the car. When the car went through the "snail" [1] and passed the commandant's office the soldiers fired several shots in the air. The car stopped and the driver came out to find out what the matter was but the soldiers waved them on. When the car was approaching the first bridge (approximately 500 m from the military) several shots were fired at the car from the mill and Sanarbekov was seriously wounded. His two friends tried to bring him to the village hospital but Sanarbekov died before they reached the hospital.

According to the residents of the village the military deny their involvement in the incident saying that no shots were fired from their territory.

The prosecutor of the Groznoselsky district came to the place of the incident but it is not known if a criminal case has been opened in connection with this fact. Khjasan Sanarbekov' death left three children orphaned.

The residents of Starye Atagi complain that in the evenings (when people are coming home from the city) the military come out to the road and, under the pretext of checking documents, hold cars with people, causing long lines of cars to form. This so-called document checking lasts for an hour and a half and it is carried out regularly, particularly after the killing of Anzor Bashirov in the village (the villagers say that he was an FSB officer).

1 A military commandant's office is located on the outskirts of the village, on the territory where a mill used to be. About a year before, the commandant's office was in the village itself but after it was fired at several times at night, it was relocated to the outskirts of the village. On the road which passes by the place where the military are now they laid concrete blocks, a so-called "snail," to cause cars to slow down, but there is no stationary check-point as such.
