IHF

Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) – member of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights (IHF) uniting national Helsinki Groups from 38 European countries, North America and former USSR. IHF is an associate member of UN institutions and European Council.

IHF headquarters is in Vienna.

Annually IHF publish a report regarding the situation with human rights in most of the countries – member of the OCSE based on the reports from national Helsinki Groups and other human rights organizations.

It organizes round-tables, seminars and conferences, including those in Moscow, concerning the human rights situation in CIS, publishes newspapers, periodical, guides for human rights organizations and conducts specialized monitorings in the field of human rights.

In 1982 several Helsinki Groups conducted an international conference “Citizens Helsinki Watch”. One of those who gave the inspiration for the conference was A.D. Sakharov.

He appealed for establishing of “united international committee” of the defense of Helsinki movement members and for uniting activities of Helsinki Groups. The work of the conference in particular lead to establishing of the International Helsinki Federation (IHF) – organization with the help of which Helsinki groups were able to support each other and to strengthen human rights movement by putting their work on international level.

The IHF headquarter was organized in Vienna and it is there until today. At the beginning IHF consisted of Helsinki Groups from Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, USA.

Today IHF consist of Helsinki Groups from Albania, Austria, Belorussia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Check Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain and others.

In the close cooperation with member committees IHF actively works on numerous international projects and send the monitoring missions to Baltic states, Central European countries, Balkans and CIS.
