Activities

The Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) is a multi-profile human rights organization and serves as a resource center for hundreds of Non-Governmental Organizations. It provides these organizations with organizational, educational, as well as other forms of support. MHG is one of the largest networking NGO in Russia. All programs and projects of the MHG are implemented for, or in co-operation with, regional NGOs. The main directions of MHG activities are:

Monitoring
• Education
• Legal programs
• Support of civil coalitions


Furthermore, the MHG is conducting expert work in the field of human rights and social problems. Under the banner of the MHG there are conferences, round-tables and expert meetings. The MHG draws leading experts from major high profile social organizations in Russia and abroad to work on theme-brochures on human rights

MHG publications, in particular, the annual report on the human rights situation in the Russian Federation serves as one of the main sources of information for Russian and Foreign researchers, journalists, politicians and, of course, the international community. Reports on monitoring results that have been prepared by the MHG are widely distributed among such organizations as the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the OSCE and are used by embassies of foreign states for the preparation of reports and negotiation agenda.

The monitoring network that was created by the MHG consists of human rights organizations from of all regions of Russia. On a regular basis the MHG provides the public full objective information on the observance of human rights on the territory of the Russian Federation.

The members of the MHG and its chairman, Ludmilla Alexeeva, are actively participating in public activities. They are also involved in negotiations with representatives of the Russian executive and legislative branches on a number of key issues in the field of human rights. Furthermore, the members of the MHG and its chairman are the originators of important human rights initiatives.
